The words hysteroscopy and laparoscopy are often used together, but they are not the same procedure. Both are endoscopic techniques, yet they look at different areas and may answer different clinical questions.
Hysteroscopy: looking inside the uterus
Hysteroscopy is used to examine the inside of the uterine cavity. It may be considered when a clinician is evaluating concerns such as abnormal bleeding, polyps, or certain fibroids. Laparoscopy: looking inside the abdomen and pelvis
Laparoscopy uses a camera introduced through small abdominal incisions to examine the abdomen and pelvis. Depending on the situation, it may be used to investigate pelvic pain, infertility-related concerns, or suspected disease, or to perform a treatment such as myomectomy, hysterectomy, or adhesiolysis. The appropriate approach depends on the clinical question and the individual patient.
Why might both be discussed?
Some symptoms can have more than one possible source. A clinician may need information about both the uterine cavity and the wider pelvis. In selected cases, combining procedures may provide a more complete assessment, but this is not a decision a patient should make based on an online article. Your doctor will consider your symptoms, examination, test results, medical history, and goals.

Ask: “What question are we trying to answer?” “Which area does this procedure examine?” “Are there non-surgical alternatives?” “Would one procedure be enough?” “What preparation and recovery should I expect?” and “What findings would change the treatment plan?” These questions help you understand the reasoning behind a recommendation.
