Overview
Uterine fibroids are among the most common reasons women seek gynaecological care. Laparoscopic myomectomy — keyhole removal of fibroids that preserves the uterus and fertility — offers less pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery than open surgery. This article argues for making the procedure routinely available within Sri Lanka’s state hospitals.
The need
Preserves fertility for women who wish to conceive, unlike hysterectomy.
Reduces recovery time and complications compared with open (abdominal) myomectomy.
Extends the benefits of minimally invasive surgery to public-sector patients who cannot access private care.
The challenges
Availability of laparoscopic equipment and consumables in state theatres.
Surgeon training and the learning curve for advanced laparoscopic suturing.
Theatre time and resource allocation within a stretched public system.
